EASTER...ËOSTRE... OSTARA...

ĒOSTRE deriva del proto-germánico *austrō, como también de la raíz proto-indoeuropea *aues-, "BRILLAR". Es evidente el vínculo entre Eostre y la diosa griega del amanecer "EOS" ("La Aurora" de los romanos).

* Grimm señala la relación entre la "brillante" Ēostre y el viento del este, que es el "Espíritu de la LUZ" llamado AUSTRI, mencionado en La Edda en prosa.

OSTARA como diosa de la FERTILIDAD -asociada al comienzo de la PRIMAVERA- es una deidad del "amanecer" o del "despertar" de las fuerzas germinativas, de modo que conceptualmente, a pesar de la ausencia de otras fuentes, el testimonio de Beda puede tener un real asidero, en medio de la bruma del Mundo Mitológico de los pueblos del NORTE de Europa.

* Guido von List afirmaba que "Ostern" era el festival del MATRIMONIO del Dios Sol con la Diosa Tierra, concibiendo a Ostara como una representación de las fuerzas femeninas generadoras.

Unlike many other pagan holidays, ÖSTARA does not have its roots in Celtic tradition, rather in ancient Anglo-Saxon beliefs. The holiday is thought to have derived its name from the fertility goddess EOSTRE, whose own name comes from the Germanic word for “east.”

The GODDESS is typically depicted as a young woman surrounded by light

and budding trees and flowers, symbolizing her association with DAWN 

and the coming of LIGHTof the SPRING season.

Symbols like eggs, rabbits and spring flowers are also associated with the GODDESS, 

speaking to the fertility and renewed LIFE she is believed to bring.

In Ancient Rome, LVPERCALIA, observed February 13–15, was an archaic rite connected to fertility.

Lupercalia was a festival local to the city of Rome.

The more general Festival of Juno Februa, meaning "Juno the Purifier "or "the Chaste Juno", was celebrated on February 13–14.

Pope Gelasius I (492–496) abolished Lupercalia.

El SOLSTICIO por sí mismo puede haber sido un momento especial del ciclo anual del año, incluso durante el periodo NEOLÍTICO. Eventos astronómicos, controlados en la antigüedad como el apareamiento de los animales, la siembra de los cultivos y la medición de las reservas entre las cosechas de invierno, muestran cómo las diferentes mitologías y las tradiciones culturales han surgido. Esto es comprobado por la física que se mantiene en los diseños de finales del Neolítico y la Edad de Bronce, como los sitios arqueológicos de Stonehenge (en Gran Bretaña) y Nueva Grange (en Irlanda). Samhain (Samaín) en el folk lore de GALICIA.

Rafael López Loureiro, maestro de escuela de Cedeira (La Coruña), fue el responsable de redescubrir esta tradición y comprobar que existía por toda GALICIA. Además, también comprobó su pervivencia en el norte de Cáceres, alrededor de la zona en la que están situadas las aldeas de habla gallega, y en zonas de Zamora y de León cercanas a Galicia y donde la lengua y las tradiciones gallegas están muy arraigadas. Además, este estudioso analizó la relación de la costumbre de las CALABAZAS con el culto a la muerte y a semejanza con las tradiciones hermanas de las islas británicas. Hasta llegó a detectar peculiaridades como la de Quiroga (Lugo), donde la calabaza tallada se seca y se conserva para usarla como máscara en el "Entroido". Su trabajo sobre esta tradición, recogido en el libro “Caliveras de melón” (calaveras de melón) y en otra de posterior aparición, empezó a llamar la atención de los antropólogos. 

Hoy en día se celebra con gran arraigo el Samhain o Samaín (adaptación al gallego de la palabra gaélica) en algunas de las ciudades y pueblos de Galicia, como La Coruña, Ferrol, Cedeira, etc.

En la villa de Ribadavia se celebra cada 31 de octubre la fiesta "a noite meiga" (la noche embrujada) en la que la ciudad "se llena" de fantasmas, brujas, vampiros... El castillo es lugar de un gran pasaje del terror, entre otras actividades.

En Coruña los rapaces (chicos) se escondían en los caminos con calabazas, previamente vaciadas y con VELAS dentro, para asustar a la gente que pasaba por las corredoiras (caminos). Las chicas llevaban collares hechos de CASTAÑAS para ahuyentar a los malos espíritus...

8)  In case that “female nouns”  derive from  “masculine nouns”, we will observe the following “endings” concerning the FEMENINE gender:-

Ø     TRIZ  :-   un actor (an actor)  - una actriz (an actress).

Ø      INA   :-    el rey (the king)  -  la reina (the queen).

Ø      ISA   :-    el papa  (the pope)  -  la papisa  (the papess).

Ø      ESA  :-    un príncipe  (a prince)  -  una princesa  (a princess).  

þ ?    In Spanish, you may find words such as:- 

AGUA (= water) &  AZUCAR (= sugar) which belong to the FEMENINE gender, therefore their ADJECTIVES will be in the “feminine gender”:- 

agua fresca (= fresh water)  &  azucar blanca (= white sugar)

HOWEVER!  their “Definite Article” in singular will not be  “LA”  but  “EL” , e.g.,

EL  agua fresca   (NOT!  La agua fresca)

þ  The GENDER may indicate differences either on “shape”, “size” or “qualities”:-

þ  In Poetry - and for people living in sea shores and coasts -  “the sea” (el mar) is experienced as something FEMENINE … LA mar.

In certain Spanish areas, people call “the heat” = “LA calor” instead of saying “EL calor”
